Woman portrait with roses on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo on the outer thigh shows a stylised woman's face with short dark hair, a feathered headpiece, pearl strands and drop earrings. Bold black outlines define the features, and the shading is solid with simple highlights. Red and pink roses with green leaves, a golden fan and a pearl necklace fill the lower half, with the figure framed against bare skin.

Dear Win,

I am writing this on the back of an old programme because the lamp at Mrs Pettifer's has gone out and I will not pay for another mantle. The Palace Rooms let me go on Saturday. Mr Hale says it is not personal, only that the new management wants girls who can kick higher than the chorus line's grandmothers. I have packed the good hat and the fan Mabel gave me the night she left for Blackpool.
Mabel had a way of closing that fan with one flick, like a full stop. It was painted with a pair of roses, red as a postbox, and gold edging that caught the footlights every time she turned. She said a fan is a girl's second mouth, and you use it to say the things your face is not allowed to. I never understood that until the Thursday the matinee was cancelled and nobody thought to tell us until we were already in our feathers.
I am going to the coast. There is a woman in Brighton who runs a glove counter and a pearl stall on the pier, and she has written that they need a girl who can wear a headpiece without looking as if the headpiece is wearing her. I think I can manage that. I have practised in the glass at the railway station, which the porters find very amusing.
Keep the fan for me, would you? Put it in the drawer with Mother's combs. I will send for it once I have a room with a window that opens. Do not let Father sell the pearls. They are only paste, but they were Mabel's, and she would want them worn.
