Two colour tattoos in a neo-trad style: a sugar skull portrait with blue hair on the calf and a sugar skull portrait with flaming red hair on the forearm, with script lettering below.

Sugar skull portraits on calf and forearm

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

Two realistic sugar skull portraits sit side by side on a lower leg and a forearm. The left figure has blue hair with an orange floral ornament, while the right figure has fiery orange hair surrounded by pink flames. Both use smooth shading with bold, saturated colour, and fine ornamental linework in blue and white decorates the face designs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Teo dropped the bag of marigolds on the kitchen table and petals scattered across the oilcloth like sequins. "Abuela's altar won't take brown ones," Marisol said, not looking up from her icing bag. She was piping a blue scroll along a cheekbone, slow and steady, the way her grandmother had taught her to pipe lace on christening cakes in a town that had long since forgotten its own bakery.

Teo pulled out a chair and rested his chin on his fists. "You're going to make it cry again." Last year the sugar had sweated in the August heat and the eye sockets had slumped like wet candles, and Abuela had laughed so hard she had to sit down on the back step. This year Marisol had mixed the meringue with less water and a pinch of cream of tartar, and the figure on the board was already hard as a cup. Its hair was a flame of orange sugar she had fanned out with a dampened brush, and on a second board the blue-haired one waited, a marigold pressed onto her brow like a brooch.

"Who's the blue one for?" Teo asked. "Nobody yet. She's for the table by the window, where the light comes in in the afternoons." Marisol set down the bag and wiped her fingers on her apron. Outside, the lane was filling with the smell of cinnamon from the tortilla stall and children arguing over who would carry the candles. She pressed the last petal into place and stood back. The two skulls looked up at them with their painted, patient eyes, as if they had been waiting for this exact kitchen all along.
