Sugar skull with rose on a foot
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of a sugar skull covers the top of a foot, with a red rose with green leaves over the crown of the skull. The eye sockets are black with teal scalloped edges and orange centres, and the nose and teeth are outlined in bold black and grey. Small red hearts and green and yellow dots sit around the jaw against the pale skin.

Mrs Doyle had painted the Harvest Wonder's sugar skulls for thirty-one winters, and she knew the look of a boy who meant to leave the show. Teddy Marr held the paraffin lamp steady over the trestle at the back of the bioscope tent while she mixed the teal for the lace edging, black for the hollows, and a dab of cadmium orange for the eyes.

"Go on, then," she said. "Draw me what you're running away with."
He sketched a skull with a rose tucked over its crown like a hat, and she tutted, because it was the only honest thing he'd drawn since Michaelmas. The rose was for his nan, he said, who grew them up the wall of a terrace in Hull and had never once seen a fairground. Mrs Doyle said nothing to that. She painted the skull onto a cardboard ticket first, then onto a plank by the flap, with hearts along the jaw as red as the pennants and a black heart for the nose.
"Those hearts are for the people you'll not see again," she said. "Tie them on properly."
The lot was gone by first light, the wagons rattling down the lane towards the coast road in a grey drizzle. Mrs Doyle found the ticket pinned to her own tent pole, the rose inked fresh and the paint still tacky at the edges. Underneath, in pencil, in a hand that had learnt its letters in a hurry, Teddy had written: Back for the lamp.
