Hello Kitty and stormtrooper cartoon tattoo

Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a cartoon character combining Hello Kitty's head, outline and red bow with a stormtrooper helmet, goggle eyes and chest armour with rectangular panels. It is drawn with thick, uniform black outlines and mostly flat black fill, with solid red on the bow and small light blue accents on the cheeks and armour. The design is centred on a plain background of skin, with the figure filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The supply boat leaves a wooden crate on the landing rock, and when you prise the lid off with a bread knife, a white kitten looks up at you from a nest of straw. She has a red bow the size of a dinner plate, and under the bow, where a face should be, sits a grey stormtrooper helmet with two black goggle eyes. Her chest is a pale plate ruled into six small panels. The manifest reads ONE RELIEF CAT, GRADE A, and below that someone has written in biro: do not feed the helmet.

She takes to the job at once. By the second morning she has learned the ninety-seven steps to the lamp room and climbs them in a straight line, pausing on each landing as if it were a checkpoint. She inspects the lens through her goggles, pats the brass of the clockwork as though checking its papers, and refuses to set foot on the sill where the gulls gather. You start talking to her, mostly about the weather, and she stares back without blinking, which you decide is professional.

The fog arrives on the third night, thick as wet wool. The horn gives a dying wheeze, and the lamp begins to slow, the gears groaning down one tooth at a time. You are halfway up with the spare oil can when a small determined shape passes you on the stairs, bow bobbing, and by the time you reach the top she is already planted beside the drive wheel, paw pressed on the sheared pin, as if she has been waiting her whole life to be asked.

You grease the pin, she holds it steady, and the beam swings out over the water again. She settles on the sill with her bow lit red, then white, then red, blinking at boats that never once look up at her.
