A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rota put me on the lamp deck the week of Día de los Muertos, which nobody aboard Tessaly Reach had celebrated properly since the first generation died off. My grandmother kept the custom alive in her cabin anyway, painting her face white with black sockets and sugar-paste scrolls. She used to say the dead only came back for things they recognised, so every year we cleared the bulkhead beside the seed vault and hung a portrait of whoever had gone out through the lock that season.

This year it was Ilse Varga, who taught me to splice cable and who never once let me win at cards. I had sketched her from memory on a sheet of printer foil, her hair lifting the way it did in the recycled air, one hand raised as if she were about to push a loose strand back. Grandmother wanted the sugar skull painted over her face, the filigree on the brow, the petals curling round the eyes. I thought it was too much. She said Ilse would have hated being mournful.

We worked through the night shift. When the lights dimmed for sleep cycle, the painted eyes caught the emergency glow and seemed, for a moment, to look straight at me. I took a bloom from the hydroponics trays, a black-petalled rose we'd bred for funerals, and pinned it beneath the foil so its shadow fell across the collarbone.

Grandmother wiped her brushes and said the rose would wilt by morning. 'Good,' she said. 'Then the dead have something to do.'
