Sugar skull woman and roses on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with long, flowing hair and ornate sugar skull face paint fills the upper forearm, with a cluster of detailed roses below her. The piece uses smooth greyscale shading for the face and hair, with fine linework in the decorative patterns on the forehead and cheeks. The arm is photographed head-on against a blurred studio background, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Sit closer, all of you, the lamp only lights one face at a time. Forty years I have told this at the crossing at Piedra Lisa, and the officers still pretend they have heard it before. Listen. On the night before the dead come home, a woman called Marisela Tovar walked up to the barrier carrying a bucket of red roses, her face painted white as church candles and ringed with black scrollwork like lace on a coffin.

The guard on duty was Teodoro Ruiz, a man with a sunburnt neck and a biro behind his ear. He asked what she was carrying. Roses for the other side, she said. He asked for her papers. She told him papers were for the living, and she had been dead since the spring of 1931, and the river had been kind enough to bring her this far. He laughed, then saw the roses were beaded with water as if they had been cut that minute. He stamped her ticket anyway, because the stamp was in his hand and his hand was tired.
Each rose had a name written on one petal in pencil. She sold them to lorry drivers, to a schoolteacher with a cracked suitcase, to a boy who paid in buttons. By dawn the bucket was empty. Teodoro, emptying his coat before he went home, found a single red rose in the inside pocket with his mother's name on its petal. He had not bought it, and he had not seen her hand it to him.
So when you cross tomorrow, mind your pockets. And if a woman with a white face asks you the time, tell her it is still today.
