Sugar skull portrait on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A realistic portrait of a woman whose face is painted as a sugar skull, with a dark skull nose, ornate filigree lines and a shaded headscarf or veil. The eyes are blue and the lips are red, while the rest of the face is rendered in smooth black and grey shading. The design wraps around the arm and is photographed close up against a blurred background.

The sugar had to be boiled to the exact thread, or it would not hold its shape, and Ines knew it was ready only by dropping a little into the cold water at the spring. Her grandmother had taught her that at the edge of the village, where the pines gave way to the forest. Every year before the night of the dead, the women carried their pale skulls up the track in baskets lined with marigold petals and set them on the flat stones beneath the oldest oak, so the dead would find something sweet waiting for them.

This year Ines painted her own face first. She laid the white on with a goose feather, drew the black around her eyes, and traced the silver scrollwork up to her temples with a single hair from her brush. Her grandmother watched from the doorway and said nothing, which was how Ines knew she disapproved. A face painted for the dead was meant to be lent to them for one night, not kept.

Up at the oak the air smelled of wet bark and candle smoke, and then a woman stood between the trunks in a grey shawl. It was her mother, who had died in the winter when the river froze. She looked at Ines for a long time without speaking. Then she lifted a corner of the shawl and said that she had been waiting for someone to bring her a face she could recognise.

Ines sat down on the cold stones, wiped the black from one cheek with her thumb, and let her mother see the rest of her.
