Sugar skulls and rose on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two stacked sugar skull designs cover the forearm, the upper skull decorated with a diamond and scrollwork and the lower one with a red rose on its crown. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat fills in purple, teal, orange, green and pink. The photograph is taken at an angle from the side, with the arm filling the frame against a black top and a white door.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third November the sugar would not set, so Agnes Coyle went out to the marigolds behind the bakehouse and cut them herself. The village said the dead came up the lane at dusk to see whether anyone still remembered them, and Agnes had always believed it, the way she believed in bread rising and the mill wheel turning.

They came one by one and stopped at her gate. A carter with mud to his knees. A girl with a blue ribbon in her hair. Old Tobias from the mill, who had never once said good morning when he was living. Each of them wanted their name said over the flower beds. Agnes knelt in the damp soil and pressed the white sugar into her moulds, marking each face with a diamond of frost on the brow, a curl of vine for the cheeks, and two orange blooms for the eyes.

Last of all came a tall man in a waistcoat with a red rose pinned where his heart should be. He had no face she recognised, only a wide grin, and he asked for nothing sweet. He asked her to plant a rose for him beside the marigolds. She did, and the next morning a bloom had opened on the crown of the lowest skull in her moulds, though she had not yet pressed it.

Agnes left the gate unlatched all that winter. In spring the lane was quiet, and the rose had grown tall enough to lean over the wall, red and steady, where anyone walking past could stop and read the names.
