Sun and crescent moon tattoo sketches
Black and grey · Flash
Two pencil drawings on white paper show a sun with a face, long pointed rays and hanging dangles on the left, and a crescent moon with dotted detailing and dangles on the right. The linework is fine and sketchy, with light shading on the sun's rays and the moon's edge. The drawings are in greyscale and sit side by side with the sun slightly larger on the left of the frame.

Pull your stool nearer, the pair of you, and mind the ash, because the fire has nothing left in it but manners and I need the warmth for my knees. Winter nights on Hollin Fold are long enough to hang a lamb's whole life in, so sit still and listen while the frost creeps up the window.

Up on the ridge, in the years before your grandfather's grandfather, there lived a sun with a face like a plate of new butter and rays as long as hayforks. Every morning he came up over Hollin Fold, squinting and sulking, and every evening he went down again without a word. Across the sky hung Mab, the moon, thin as a paring knife and twice as sharp. She wore a fringe of silver drops along her edge, and she never once let them go, not even when the wind tore at her.
Then came the winter the beck froze to the bottom and the ewes stood in the snow with their breath hanging over them like smoke. The sun's rays snapped off one by one in the cold, brittle as dry bracken, and he could not reach the fold at all. He came down to the gate one dusk, pale and wheezing, and asked Mab for a drop of her silver. She laughed at him, but she was not cruel, so she unhooked the longest drop and let it fall into the water trough.
The water moved under it, the ice split like a shell, and the ewes came down to drink. Come spring the sun was back in his full strength, and he hung his first new ray over the gate to pay her back. Look at the gate at first light and you'll see the frost hanging in little drops from every bar. That is the moon's silver, still owed, and still being paid.
