Sun and crescent moon line drawing
Black and grey · Flash
Two celestial motifs are drawn in black ink on a plain off-white background: a sun with pointed rays on the left and a crescent moon on the right. The sun has a ring of hatched lines, and the moon has fine dashed contour lines along its edge. The drawing is in black and grey with no colour, and the two motifs sit apart with plenty of empty space around them.

The last mule of the morning string came through the gate at Hollin Pass with its load of salt still dry, and Nessa Trent counted it twice before she let herself sit down. Her brother Tomas would take the dark road tonight, the one that ran along the scree above the lake where the ice never quite let go, and she would be asleep in the waystation before his lantern reached the bend.

They had kept the board by the door for three winters. Whoever came off a shift first chalked a mark for the other: a sun when the track was clear and the sky would hold, a crescent when the scree had shifted and the lantern had to be carried low. Nobody else in the valley could read it, which was the point. Nessa drew her suns with careful rays, eight of them, the way their grandmother had painted the lintel. Tomas, who had never once managed a straight line, drew his moons thick and lopsided, like something bitten.
The night the snow came early, the board had a moon on it and nothing else. She stood in the doorway a long time with the chalk in her fist. Then she left the space beside it empty, and drew a second sun, small and tight, its rays crowded in as though they were holding each other back. When the lantern finally came round the bend at first light, low and careful, she was already at the gate.
He read the board before he said a word. Then he took the chalk from her and drew one more crescent beneath hers, and they stood looking at the gap between the marks, the width of a hand, which was exactly what it had always been.
