The road over Hollin Cross closed on Tuesday and has not opened since, so we have had nothing but each other and the bread oven for company. Two guests came in off the snow on the first night, late, with frost in their eyebrows. The one with the warm face took the room over the kitchen, and the other, the pale blue one with the long sleepy eyelid, asked only for the chair nearest the window and a cup of something he could not taste.

They never keep the same hours, which I had not expected. The warm one rises before the bread and goes out to the yard to shovel, hair full of light, and by the time the lamps are lit the blue one is at the glass with his curve pressed against it, as if he means to be let out. Mr Harrow from the mill says it is all a trick of the dusk. I told him the trick is that they both keep looking at the same place and never once turn round.

Last night the sky cleared. The warm one came in early, slow with the cold, and sat down on the bench beside the blue one, close enough that the lamp made one shape of them. Neither spoke. I counted nine stars in the window before they got up, and the next morning there were nine small specks of salt on the sill that nobody had spilt.

They leave when the road opens, Tom. I'll post this with the first cart. Keep the lamp lit for me.
