Sun and moon face tattoo on forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of a sun and crescent moon, each with a stylised face, shown on the forearm. Bold outlines define the sun's rays and the moon's swirling clouds, while dotwork stippling shades the moon and parts of the sun. Small dotted stars trail from the lower right of the design against plain, lightly lit skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the wind, it comes up the pass like a dog after a hare. You've all seen the sun shoulder his way over Kettle Ridge every morning, rays out like a carter's whip. Him I'll leave be. I want you to hear about Moon.

She was a long time coming to the pass. Her hair was cloud, rolled and curled like the wool my aunt spun, and whenever she grew careless with it, stars fell loose and caught in the bracken. You'll find them still, if you go looking after dark. Little dotted things, a trail of them running down toward the valley, as if someone had pinned a letter to the sky and forgotten the rest.

The sun loved her the way a man loves a lantern he cannot carry. Every day he burned across the sky, and every day she sat half-hidden behind him, her pale face turned sideways, never quite meeting his eye. The folk in the village said they were married. The folk in the village said a great many things. My grandmother said the truth was simpler: he was too bright to see her plainly, and she was too kind to shine on him.

So one evening in late autumn, when the shepherds were hurrying their flocks down before the snow, Moon slid across the sun's face and stayed. Just a breath, just long enough for the light to go soft at the edges and the birds to hush. Then she drifted off over the tops, shaking loose a few more stars, and the sun went on blazing as though nothing had happened. But the next morning the bracken was silver with frost, and every stone on the pass had a small star caught in it. That was her answer. It was all the sun ever got, and he took it gladly.
