Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A sun with a crescent moon face in profile overlapping its centre, with a stylised face in the middle and closed eyes. The sun's rays are petal-shaped and outlined, with dotted and stippled detailing around the rim and between the rays. The piece is rendered in black ink with grey shading and sits centrally on the upper thigh against a plain skin background.

You stop counting the flights at the ninth landing, because the number was never the problem. Cobden House has forty-one floors and two lifts, and on Tuesdays both of them sulk. Mrs Okafor from flat 1102 says the building is a sundial that forgot how to tell time, and you have started to believe her, climbing with a carrier bag of onions in one hand and your little brother's school shoes in the other.

The stairwell window on each landing is the only thing in the block that gets the whole sky. Somebody scratched a sun into the grime on the eleventh, rays like petals, dots stippled round the rim, and inside it a face that is half moon, half woman, eyes shut as if listening to the traffic below. Nobody admits to drawing it. You suspect Dariusz from the night shift, who draws on everything with a biro and a patience nobody gives him credit for.

On the Tuesday the lifts died for good, you found him on the landing with a bucket and a sponge, trying to wipe the sun clean before the council inspector came. You told him to leave it. He said the moon side had gone thin, that the rain had got under it. You knelt on the cold concrete and together you traced the dots again with your fingertip, one, two, the way you count out rent.

Next morning the window was clean except for that one face, which had faded everywhere but the eyes. Dariusz swore he hadn't touched them. You still climb past it every day, and every day the sun looks as if it is waiting for the moon to finish its shift.
