Traditional woman profile with flowers

Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman's profile in a headscarf is framed by large flowers, leaves and a decorative comb at the bottom. Bold outlines are filled with dense black shading and fine hatching, giving the flowers and scarf strong contrast. The design fills the frame, with the profile facing left and the comb sweeping down the right side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boats came in on the make of the tide, and by half past five my mother had her headscarf knotted tight under her chin and was already shouting down the quay for somebody to fetch the ice. I was twelve that summer and far too old to be sent to the fish sheds, so I sat on the bollard with the bone comb in my back pocket, working the knots out of my hair the way she had taught me, and watched the Hopeful Star nose round the harbour wall with gulls screaming behind her.

The Star was not the boat that worried her. My father's Good Intent had gone out past the Scroby sands two days before, and the wind had been backing all night. Mother pinned a fresh paper rose into her scarf, the way she did on the days she would not sit down, and sent me to the chapel steps with a flask of tea for the wives who had gathered there. Mrs Dunn asked me to comb her daughter's hair while we waited, and I did, slowly, because it gave my hands something to do.

The Good Intent came in at the last of the light with her net torn and a crate lid nailed across her wheelhouse window. My father lifted one arm from the rail and waved it, and the whole quay breathed out at once. Mother did not run. She walked to the edge of the stone, pulled the faded rose from her scarf, and let it drop into the green water, where it turned slowly and drifted out past the wall toward the open sea.
