On the ninth night out of Falmouth, the moon came down the mainstay and sat on the water cask with her face turned half away. Nobody aboard had invited her. The cook, a man called Pell who had never once looked up from his pans, dropped a ladle and swore he would not look at her now either.

She had come, she said, because the sun had been sulking. For thirty years they had passed each other across the sky, one rising as the other sank, and neither had ever stopped to say a word that was not about the weather. "He has a face like a brass pan," she said, "and rays like a bad-tempered hedgehog. I am tired of being the smaller thing he has to look past."

The sun, unseen but close, heard this through the open hatch and climbed down after her, which the sailors agreed was impossible for a thing that size. He came to the rail with his rays tangled in the rigging. Neither of them spoke for the length of a watch. Then the moon laughed, and the sun's light caught the edge of her crescent and turned it gold.

By morning they had gone back to their places, and the ship ran on through the grey. But Pell swore that from then on, whenever the sky paled at dawn, a thin silver line lay on the water a moment longer than it should, as if someone had left a lamp burning in a window for a neighbour.
