Compass and feathered arrow on thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A compass rose with a star at its centre and cardinal letters around the ring sits on the outer upper leg, linked to a feathered arrow that runs to the right. The linework is fine and the feathers are shaded with soft grey gradients. The ink is entirely black and grey against warm skin, with pink lace underwear and a grey surface visible at the edges of the frame.

The bulkhead clock on the Tern Hollow read a quarter past three when the magnetometer finally gave up, and I stood in the navigation cradle with my palms flat on the cold console, listening to the hull tick as it cooled. Nobody aboard had ever steered without the field. Our grandparents had drawn the charts by hand, and what they left us was a compass rose of pale ceramic set into the dash, its eight points lettered in a worn script, a star pressed into its centre like a nail head.

Dorrit Vance, who had kept the rigging for thirty years, came up the ladder with a box of spent cells and a face like a shut hatch. 'Not coming back,' she said. I told her the rose still turned if you wound it by hand. She laughed at me. But I had found my great-aunt's logbook in the flight locker, and on its first page she had drawn the rose and beside it a feathered arrow, fletched in careful grey pencil, with a line beneath: steer by the arrow, the star is only where you have been.
We spent six days winding the rose. Each evening the brass needle swung and settled, pointing at nothing but our own shadow, until on the seventh I stopped watching the needle and watched the arrow instead. It ran outward from the rose, the way feathers trail behind something already gone. So we flew with the feathers at our backs and the star underfoot, and the dark ahead was just dark, nothing more to be afraid of than that.
When the lights of Caddis Reach finally rose over the rim, Dorrit ran her thumb around the ring of letters and said nothing for a long time. Then she wound the rose once more, out of habit, and the needle swung hard and held, pointing the way we had come.
