Sun with a face on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of a sun with a face at its centre, shown with two closed eyes, a nose and lips, and a vertical line dividing the face down the middle. Long, tapering rays with curled ends radiate outward in a rounded pattern. The shading is dark brown to black on pale skin, with a warm-toned photo filter over the whole picture, and the tattoo sits at the centre of the frame.

The sun still won't tell me the time, Margaret, so I've stopped asking it and started listening to the bees instead. Arthur's face is still on the dial, the one he cut into the Portland stone the summer before he went into hospital. Two closed eyes, a nose he was rather proud of, and that stripe he insisted on running straight down the middle, brow to chin, so that one half would always be going to bed while the other was getting up.

I thought it was a joke until last Tuesday. I was out at seven with the secateurs and the rays were all wrong, every spike laid long and soft across the lawn, curling at the tips where the shadow of the pear tree caught them. The pale half was still in sun and the dark half was already in the hedge. I stood there in my dressing gown for ten minutes like a fool, watching the line between them creep across the gravel.

So I've moved the roses. Not much, only the three bushes by the back step, so that the pale half falls on the bed where the beans go and the dark half falls on the path where nothing grows anyway. The pear will be a nuisance in August, but he never liked that tree, so I've decided to let it cast whatever shadow it likes. Come up at the weekend and bring your reading glasses. I want you to tell me which side is which, because I can never remember, and I suspect he picked the wrong half on purpose to make me ask.
