Every August the sun came down low over the Pellow orchard to see whether the apples were ready, and every August old Marta Crane told her grandson to keep out of the way while she tallied them. The sun had a face like a plate someone had polished too hard, and it liked to rest its rays on the wall of the cider house, where the wasps came to drink.

The year the blight came to the lower rows, the sun grew sulky and would not hang its light properly. The trees went brown at the edges. Marta strung up what she could salvage on a length of cord, the dull windfalls and the wormy ones, and hung them in swags from the branches of the eldest tree, the way her mother had strung beads for the harvest supper. Each little fruit got a dot of blue paint for a stone. The sun saw the garland and, out of spite or pride, it looked at her for a long time.

Then it asked her what she wanted. Marta said nothing. She had been waiting all her life to be asked that by something bigger than her, and now that it had happened she could only think of the lower rows. "Those ones," she said. "Put the colour back in them."

The sun laughed, and its rays flared red across the grass. By morning the blight had gone, the windfalls were sweet as honey, and the garland still hung from the eldest tree, dotted and glittering, with a small diamond of light at the bottom of each swag where the sun had touched it. Marta never took it down.
