The porridge had caught again by the time Mags Dunnet got the lid off the big pan, so she swore in the flat Orkney voice her mother had given her and scraped the black crust into the bucket before the skipper could smell it from the wheelhouse. The Maren was rolling easy for once, the stove rail creaking in its brackets, and through the scuttle above the sink the sky was going from iron to a thin pewter with a bright edge along the water.

Tam Reid came down the ladder two rungs at a time, still dragging his oilskin over his head. 'Is that the sun or a wheel?' he asked, pointing at the round brass vent cover over the stove, which she had polished the week before until the rings showed. The outer band had triangles stamped in a row, all their points turned one way, and the ovals in the middle looked like seeds in a pod. 'It's a sun,' she said. 'My granny had one on her kitchen wall, cut from tin. She said it kept the bad weather out of the bread.'

He didn't believe her, which suited her, because she had been making it up as she went. Past the harbour wall the real sun broke clear of the horizon and sent its long rays across the swell, each one thinning to a point the way the spikes on the vent did. The light came through the scuttle and lay in a bright stripe over the table. Tam ran his finger along it and said it was warm, and she told him it was only glass.

She set five chipped bowls in a ring around the light, one for each of the men still asleep in the bunks, and poured the porridge in a steady circle until the pan was empty. Overhead the boots of the watch began to thump across the deck. Mags tapped the stove rail twice with the wooden spoon, the way her granny used to, and the sun on the table shifted with the roll of the ship and stayed where it was.
