Spiral sun design

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a single sun motif drawn in black ink on a plain white background. A tight spiral fills the centre, surrounded by a ring of sharp, tapered rays of varying lengths. The linework is even and bold, with no shading, and the composition is centred with generous empty space around the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The keeper's wife at Carrick Nab had a habit of counting the rays on the sun her husband drew in the margins of the tide tables. There were twenty-two that winter, she told the boy who brought the paraffin, and she knew because she had counted them every morning while the kettle came to the boil.

The sea had taken the lower gallery rail in November and the lamp had gone dark for three nights before the relief boat could get across. When the light came back on the fourth evening, the spiral of the lamp-room stairs was wet to the top, and the keeper swore the sun had come down the tower to look at them. He had made the drawing that night, in ink, on the back of a chart, and pinned it above the stove where the damp could not reach it.

They did not speak of the sun again until spring. Then a fisherman's daughter came up the path with a cut on her hand and asked what the spiral was for. The keeper's wife told her it was the way a sun moves when it has been out too long at sea and wants to find its own way home, winding in on itself, sharp at the edges and soft in the middle.

The girl laughed and said that sounded like a sun that was lost. The keeper's wife shook her head and put the kettle on, and said nothing more, because the rays were still twenty-two, and the light was still burning, and that was all the counting anybody needed to do.
