Brown linework sun with a face, swirling rays and small stars on the upper back of a woman with her hair up, in a fine line style.

Sun with face and stars on upper back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A woman seen from behind shows a sun with a human face at the centre, surrounded by long swirling rays, small star shapes and dotted trails. The design is drawn in fine brown lines with little shading, and it sits across the upper back below the neckline of a white lace top. The background is an outdoor area with trees and blurred people, and the composition centres on the design.

The sun on the north tower had been squinting down at the courtyard for longer than anyone in Carrow could remember. Old Hollis said the mason who cut it had given it a face so it would never forget us, and I believed him until the summer I was eleven and the well went dry. We carried water up from the river in buckets, two at a time, my sister Wenna swearing at every step, while the carved sun watched us from its ring of rays.

Wenna was the one who noticed the stars. They ran in a dotted trail from the sun's lower rays, pricked into the stone so faintly you could only see them when the light came slantwise after supper. We climbed the broken stair with a candle stub and a ball of twine, and I counted the dots aloud while she measured the gaps between them, the way Father had taught us to pace a field boundary.

The trail ended at the base of the keep, under a flagstone nobody had lifted since the siege. Beneath it, cold and smelling of iron, was a stone channel and, at its bottom, a dark seam of water no wider than my hand. We spent three nights with a bent spoon and a borrowed crowbar, and on the fourth the spring rose to meet the bucket.

Hollis came down to the courtyard in his nightshirt to see it, and said nothing for a long while. Then he went up the north tower and I followed, and in the grey light the sun's face seemed to have loosened its brow. I took the chalk from my pocket and drew one more star at the tip of the last ray, where the trail had always been heading.
