Sun with face on the side of a torso

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a sun motif with a face at its centre, surrounded by long, thin, tapering rays. The tattoo is drawn in fine dark outline with minimal shading, and the skin tone is the only other colour. The composition is a soft, close crop of the side of the torso, with the tattoo placed to the right of centre against a blurred background.

The lamp had died again at half past two, and by the time I'd climbed the hundred and eighty-three steps with my tin of paraffin and a cold cup of tea, the fog had swallowed the lower rocks whole. Mrs Ferris had rung the station twice already about the horn. I told her the horn was the least of anyone's worries tonight.

The light itself was old Tobias Crane's pride. He had a sun painted on the iron band above the lantern room, a round face with two eyes and a mouth that never quite settled, and rays shooting out thin as knitting needles. He claimed it was the sun keeping an eye on the boats while the real one went off to bother the Americas. The paint had mostly flaked, but the outline was still there, black and patient, and I found myself nodding to it every time I passed.

The fault was a cracked mantle, no bigger than a fist. I fitted the spare from the cupboard under the stairs, lit the wick, and wound the clockwork weights back up the tower. Then I opened the logbook, and in the margin beside every storm entry for forty years was a small pencilled face squinting into the weather, a different hand each decade, always with rays.

Down below, the first engine note came through the murk, low and uncertain. I cranked the brass handle until my wrist ached, the beam swung out across the water, and somewhere out there a boat turned for home. I drew a face in the margin of tonight's entry too, a bit crooked, and gave it rays like everyone before me.
