A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ada Pell had been told by the council man that the allotment on Cinder Lane would be ploughed for a bypass by Michaelmas, and she said nothing to him except that he had mud on his good shoes. Then she went home and dug up the old rose.

It was a dark, crumpled thing by the shed, a cutting her mother had taken from a churchyard wall in 1951, and it had outlived two husbands' worth of hedges and one greenhouse. She wrapped its roots in a wet feed sack and carried it up the lane under her arm like a loaf. Behind her the daisies that had seeded themselves along the path turned their faces after her, the way they do when the sun has gone in.

At the new plot, beyond the water tower, nobody had planted anything but nettles. Ada knelt in the clay with a trowel borrowed from the milkman and worked until her knees stopped reporting to her. She set the rose where the light would reach it at noon, tamped the soil, and pressed a daisy root in beside it as an afterthought, since the daisies had been insisting for years.

The council man came back in spring to measure for the bypass and found a rose the height of a child, budding in the wind, with a flock of white daisies leaning in as though listening. He stood there a long while with his tape run out. Then he rolled it up, walked round the bed, and went back to his van without a word.
