A sunflower with a round centre and layered petals is tattooed on the lower stomach, just above the waistband of light blue denim shorts. The design uses dark outlines and grey shading, with the centre and petals filled in tones of grey. The photograph is a close, slightly angled shot of the torso and hand, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

Sit yourselves down on that bench, the pair of you. The 4.10 is forty minutes late and staring at the departures board won't hurry it along. I'll tell you about Mab Crowther, who kept the seed tin at Ashby Junction in the summer of 1931.

Mab kept her seeds in an old cocoa tin under the signal box stairs. Every spring she pushed them into the cinder bank behind the coal drops, where the sun cleared the roofs by six. By August the sunflowers stood taller than the signalman, big grey heads with rings inside rings, and every morning they turned on their stalks to face the east. The signalman swore they turned to watch the 6.15 come through. Mab just said they knew a good train when they saw one.

Then the war came and the line was requisitioned for troop trains, and the box was shut and boarded. Mab wrapped a handful of seed in her handkerchief, climbed onto the last goods wagon bound for the coast, and nobody at Ashby heard from her for nine years. The cinder bank went to nettles. Then one wet morning a letter arrived addressed simply to the sunflower lady, Ashby Junction. Inside was a single dried head, and a note in pencil: It came up through the sleepers at the end of the platform. I thought someone should know.

There, that's the train now, look at the clock. Remember, a sunflower only keeps facing the sun while it's young. Once the seed is heavy it hangs its head and looks down at the ground, the same as the rest of us.
