Hand-drawn black ink sun with wavy rays surrounding the words radiate love in script, on a tan kraft paper background.

Sun with radiate love lettering

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A sun drawn with a circle at its centre and many wavy rays extending outwards to the edge of the frame. The words radiate love are written in handwritten script inside the circle. The black linework is even and the design is centred on a plain tan, textured background with no shading or colour.

The laundrette on Cawdor Street shuts at eleven, but I never locked the back door before two, because Mr Dhillon's van brought the restaurant linen in at half past one and somebody had to sign for it. That was how I came to know the man who drew suns on everything. He sat by dryer four each night with a biro and the back of a takeaway menu, scratching out rays until the paper tore.

His name was Teodor, and he never said where he slept. He kept his drawings in a carrier bag and gave them away to anyone who stopped to watch the machines. Mostly they went to mothers with toddlers who needed something to do with their hands. The one he gave me was a sun inside a ring, its rays wobbling like heat over a road, and across the middle, in pencil pressed so hard it shone, the words radiate love.

I pinned it above the change machine. Over the winter the damp got into the corner and the paper went soft and brown, the colour of old dryer dust. Teodor stopped coming in around Advent. Nobody on the street knew where he had gone, and the policeman who asked didn't seem to think finding out was his business.

In March I found a new drawing wedged in the lint trap of dryer four. It was a sun again, smaller, with a second circle pencilled around it, so the rays had to go round twice. I took it home and didn't know who to show it to. Some mornings I still stand at the window while the first light comes over the bins, thinking about how much a person can give away from a carrier bag.
