Dear Tom,

The rain has finally stopped over the wash-house, so I am writing this on the back step where the light comes in sideways. Mam says I should stop wasting paper on you when you are only two streets away at the Ellen pit, but she has never read the notes you leave in your coat pocket for me to find on Sunday.

The ivy on the chapel wall has gone wild since you left. Last week I climbed the ladder with the shears and cut it back, and under the leaves I found old initials scratched into the stone by some lad who went down the shaft in 1911 and never came up the same. I did not tell Father Lowe. I left them be. Some things ought to stay where they were put.

Your brother came by with a sack of coal this morning and said you were teaching the new boys to tap the seam before they swing, the way you taught me to listen to a kettle. He said you had the whole face laughing. I hope that is true, because I have been counting the hours on the clock in the front room like a miser counts coins.

Keep your lamp bright and your back straight, and come up to the light when the whistle goes. I have kept the kettle warm and the door on the latch.

Yours always, Nell
