Stylised sun with wavy rays
Colour · Flash
A sun motif drawn as a ring with an open centre and alternating straight and wavy rays radiating outward. The design uses solid, filled shapes with no shading, so the linework is bold and even. It is shown in a single muted gold or tan tone, centred on a plain white background.

Dear Ada, the lock at Hempstead has silted again, so we are tied up below the mill for three nights, and the cook has taken to singing hymns over the kettle. I would have written sooner, but the ink froze in its pot on Tuesday and I only got it thawed by leaning it against the stove.

You asked in your last whether the sun ever shows itself properly on the canal. It does, mostly in the mornings, over the reed beds, when the water goes the colour of weak tea and every ray finds a seam between the planks. Father always said the sun on a barge was a kind of promise, round as a plate at the centre and wavering at the edges like a flame someone had blown on. I thought him soft until I watched it set through the lock gates last week, all twisted gold and no two rays alike.
Mr Pell, who owns the Patience, has asked me to take the children's coal up to the wharf before the frost. I told him I would rather walk the towpath with the horse. He laughed and said the towpath is for people who have forgotten how to be carried. So I am writing this from the bow with my boots on the rail, and tomorrow I will lead the horse up the hill myself and let the barge follow.
Mind the middle of the sun, Ada. Father used to say the bright part is only the hole where the light gets out. Keep the centre open and the rays will look after themselves. Your loving sister, Nell.
