Sunflower and leaves on an arm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A sunflower with a stippled, dotted centre and layered petals sits at the top of a stem that runs down the arm, with dark leaves and two closed buds along the way. The linework is fine and clean, and the leaves and buds are filled with solid black shading that contrasts with the lighter petals. The design is set against a plain pale background, with the arm filling the frame diagonally.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are twenty-two the winter the Constance Vey loses her starboard trawl boards, and you learn that a fishing fleet keeps its own calendar. Nobody on the quay says the date. They say the herring are in, or the skate have turned, or the wind has gone round to the east for the third day running, and you are expected to know what each of those means for your wages.

Your uncle Dennis skippers her from the wheelhouse with a flask wedged between his knees. He has grown sunflowers in the strip of ground behind the Tern Street chip shop for thirty years, and he talks about them the way other men talk about engines. Tall ones, he says, that follow the light across the sky all day and then shut their heads up tight once the sun has gone, as if saving themselves for the morning. You tell him sunflowers do not care about your wages. He laughs and hands you the flask.

The storm comes in from the Dogger on a Tuesday. A shackle snaps on the hauler and whips past your head close enough to hum. For nine hours you work the nets while the boat climbs and drops, and Dennis holds her head to the swell, singing the same hymn over the radio, badly, until the set loosens. By dawn the cloud has split open in a long bar of yellow over the water, and the light finds the wet deck, the gulls, the catch heaped like dark leaves at your feet. You straighten up with your palms raw. Dennis is staring east with one hand flat on the wheel, and you realise he is not looking at the sea at all but at the light, the way his sunflowers face it.

Back on the quay that afternoon, you walk the long way to Tern Street. The strip behind the chip shop has gone to seed, the heads bowed and brown, but near the fence one stalk has kept a bud closed tight, green and stubborn. You do not pry it open. You stand there with the gulls calling over the harbour and let it take its own time.
