Small bee tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a bee in flight sits on the inner wrist of a hand with dark red nail polish, with a knitted sleeve visible at the top of the frame. The bee is drawn with fine outlines and soft grey shading on its body and wings, with the wings left mostly pale. The dark background keeps the focus on the small design.

The snow had shut the pass by noon, and by dusk the innkeeper's wife had put you in the room above the taproom because it was the only one whose fire drew properly. You unpacked the wax-sealed jar your aunt insisted you carry over the hill, and a bee came out of the rafters as if it had been waiting for the warmth. It was a fat, dun thing, half-dead with cold, and it crawled across the windowsill in slow, careful circles.

Downstairs, the landlord Tobias Greave argued with two carters about a cart wheel and the price of oats. You watched the bee instead. Your aunt kept forty skeps on the south slope and used to say a hive never swarmed in a hard frost, only in a mild one, and that a bee out of season was either lost or bringing news. You dabbed honey onto your fingertip and held it to the glass.
By the second bell the bee had climbed onto your finger and settled there, wings folded flat and pale as frost on a gate. In the morning the pass would open, the carters said, and the post-rider would take letters down into the valley. You had one letter of your own, unsent, addressed to your aunt, and you had not yet decided whether to tell her how far you had come.
At first light the window was white and the room was bright with it. The bee was gone from your finger. Warm air was rising through the floorboards, and on the sill lay a single wing, fine as tissue. You folded the letter around it, pressed the jar into your coat, and went down to the cart with the sun in your eyes.
