Two dandelions on an inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two dandelion seed heads on long thin stems, with one larger head higher up and a smaller one lower down, plus a few loose seeds drifting in the upper right. The linework is fine and delicate, with dotted accents for the seeds and soft shading in the fluffy heads. The image is black and white, so the ink appears as black and grey, and the wrist fills the frame against a plain background.

One breath, Mum always said, and you had to mean it. Nell had been practising on the allotment fence since teatime, cheeks puffed, while her little brother Alfie crouched in the verge hunting the scruffiest dandelion he could find. He brought it to her cupped in both hands, as if it might bruise.

Gran's plot ran down to the railway cutting, and the trains rattled past every few minutes, shaking the wire under their palms. Nell counted trains instead of seconds. Four went by before she was ready. Her clock was a proper globe, every seed still tight. Alfie's was thinner, half its fluff already gone, the seeds lifting at the edges like a sleeve in a draught. He wanted to keep it for himself, he said, because he was the one going to Doncaster on Monday, and Dad's car had been packed since Saturday with his football boots rolling loose in the boot.
Nell didn't blow hers. She pushed her big clock into his fist instead and told him it counted double, because she'd already used up her wishes on the trains. He looked at her for a long time, then pressed his lips together and blew. The seeds went up in a grey rush, caught the low sun, and spun out over the cutting. One stuck to the wire, one settled on the bonnet of the last carriage, and the rest went on after the train until she couldn't tell them from the light.
Alfie kept the empty stalk in his pocket all the way to the car. Nell stood at the fence with her own clock gone, counting nothing at all.
