Black and grey sunflower tattoo on a forearm with the script words You are my sunshine, my only sunshine running up beside it.

Sunflower and script quote on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large sunflower with a shaded centre and layered petals sits across the lower forearm, with leaves extending upwards. Fine black script reading You are my sunshine, my only sunshine runs diagonally up the arm beside the flower. The shading is soft and grey-toned, with bold outlines around the petals and clean black lettering.

Dear Maud,

The ward was quiet tonight, so I am writing this on the back of a drug chart while the kettle takes its time. Mrs Okafor in bed four asked me to read her the card from her grandson, and when I got to the bottom he had drawn a sunflower with the petals all wrong, square as biscuits, and written the song underneath in capitals. She laughed until the monitor beeped at her. I told her my own mother used to sing it while she ironed, flat as a pancake, and Mrs Okafor said mothers always sing it flat.

At two I went down to the stores for the spare linen and found Dev, the porter, sitting on a trolley with his cap in his lap, looking at a seed packet. He grows sunflowers on the roof of his block in Walthamstow, he said, and the big ones always turn to face whoever is shouting loudest at them from the pavement. I asked him how he knew that and he said he had stood in the road long enough to find out. We ate two digestives each and didn't say much more.

When I got back, bed four was empty and the card was gone from the locker. The nurse on the next shift says he came for her at half past one and she went very gently, with the sheet folded square at her chin. I keep thinking about those awful petals. I would like to draw them properly for him one day, big and round and facing the window.

See you Thursday. Bring your own biscuits, the stores have only the plain ones.

Love, Ruth
