Three red roses and leaves on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows three red roses in different stages of opening, with dark green leaves filling the gaps between them. The petals are outlined in black and shaded in deeper reds and pinks, giving them depth. The roses run diagonally down the outer thigh, and the background is a pink bedsheet and a pale wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been told the rose cuttings wouldn't take in the salt wind, so she kept them in the lee of the stone wall behind the post office on Inishbeg, where the gorse came down to the shingle and nothing else grew straight. Her grandfather had carried the first bush over from the mainland in a crate of wet sacking, the summer before the ferry stopped running on Sundays. It died twice. The third time, she took it personally.

By August the bush had three buds on one stem, each at a different stage, like a family photographed on the same afternoon. The tight one was the colour of wine held up to a lamp. The half-open one had its outer petals folded back, darker at the edges, and the fully open one showed its gold heart to anyone who bent close enough. Dark green leaves crowded the gaps between them, glossy from the rain. Nell counted them every morning before she fed the hens.

On a Thursday the post boat came in, and Mr Doyle from the harbour office stopped at the wall to ask whether she meant to sell the roses at the summer fair. She said no. He said her grandfather would have sold them for a shilling a bloom. She said her grandfather had sold nothing on the island he didn't have to, and then she cut the open rose for the first time, carried it up the lane in her hand, and set it on the windowsill of the empty cottage where he used to sit, so the petals could finish opening where he could see them.

The third bud took its time, the way roses do, and Nell let it.
