The sun had grown tired of following the boy, so it stopped at the edge of the salt marsh and would not climb any higher. His mother said it was sulking. His grandmother said it was listening. Every morning the boy walked out past the reeds with a bucket, and every morning the sun sat low and yellow on the water, waiting for him to say something worth hearing.

One day he came with nothing in his hands. He sat on the cold mud and told the sun about the goat that had died in the spring, and the well that had gone brackish, and the older brother who had sailed to the river towns and not written. He told it everything, until his voice cracked and he had no more words to give. The sun said nothing, but a warmth came up through the mud and into his bones, and he noticed for the first time that the reeds around him had turned their faces toward him.

When he went home the next morning there was a seed in his palm, grey and striped, and his grandmother nodded as if she had expected it. He pressed it into the wet ground by the doorstep. By midsummer a stalk taller than the house stood there, and at its top a head of gold turned slowly to follow him across the yard. The sun, the old woman said, had finally found a place to keep its eye on him, and it had chosen the one thing in the village that never looked away.
