Dreamcatcher with feathers on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a radial web, a beaded outer ring and three hanging feathers with thin trailing strands below. The linework is fine and even, with soft shading on the feathers and a few small dots along the rim. The image is black and grey, and the tattoo fills the centre of the frame against pale skin and dark hair.

The bicycle wheel had come from Harold Penrose's yard on the Saturday, buckled at the rim, and Edie spent three evenings straightening it on the kitchen table while her mother pretended not to watch. Her sister Marjorie had been sleeping badly since the letter from the ministry came, lying awake until the church clock struck two, and Edie had decided a thing could be done about it even if nobody else believed in such nonsense.

She laced the spokes with lamb's wool dyed in cold tea, working from the hub outwards so the web came out round and even, the way the lace-makers did it on Fernley Street. Round the rim she threaded forty small glass beads bought loose from the Woolworths in Morpeth, pale as milk teeth, and when those ran short she used the clay buttons from her father's old waistcoat. The feathers were the hardest. The pigeon fancier at the bottom of the bank wanted a shilling each and settled for three grey ones plucked from a bird that had gone into the stew pot the week before.

On the night she finished, she hung it from the brass hook above Marjorie's bed and tied the thin brown strands to the frame so they trailed down toward the pillow. Marjorie woke at two as usual, saw the thing turning slowly in the draught from the window, and laughed at it for a full minute before she slept again.

In the morning the web was whole, but one feather had swung round to face the wall. Marjorie said she had dreamed of nothing at all, and for the first time in a month she sounded like she meant it.
