The frost had got into the well again by the time Mabry Dunn went out with the bucket, and she had to break the skin of ice with the heel of her boot before the water would come up clean. Her father had sold the last of the sunflowers at Lowther market in September, all but the one by the east gate, which had bent over in the rain and which he said was no use to anyone. She cut it down anyway and carried it into the kitchen, where it lay on the table for a week with its face turned toward the stove.

When the snow came in earnest the hens stopped laying and the cow went dry, and the flour went the way of everything else. Mabry sat up with the lamp and worked the seeds loose with her thumbnail, one row at a time, counting them into a tin. There were four hundred and eleven. Her mother used to say a sunflower remembers the sun it was grown under, and that the seed keeps that memory until somebody sets it in the ground. Mabry did not believe it, but she did not throw the seeds on the fire either.
In the hungriest week of January a boy came up the lane from the Harrow place, asking for anything at all for his sisters. Mabry gave him bread and a fistful of seed for the birds to share, and kept back the tin. Her father watched her do it and said nothing, which from him was a kind of blessing.
In March the thaw came off the hill in one night, and in the morning there was a thread of green along the fence line where nothing had been. She went out with the tin and her bare hands and pressed the seeds into the wet dark soil, one by one, all of them facing the same way.
