By half past, the sun was a rumour behind the tannery chimneys. She carried the first batch of seeded loaves to the window ledge to cool and found a sunflower someone had left there, its head bent sideways, pressed flat in a tea towel. Nobody on the early shift had bought flowers. She turned it over. The brown centre had gone papery but the petals still held a yellow warmer than anything in the lamplight, and she thought of the allotment behind the chapel where Tom Dunning grew them tall as doorframes, shaking seed into his pockets every September.
She tucked the flower into the mug hook above the sink.
