Teal jellyfish on an upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A teal jellyfish with a rounded bell and long trailing tentacles is tattooed on the upper arm, with a softly blended cloud of green ink beneath it. The linework is light and the shading is watercolour-like, with the bell showing darker teal edges and paler highlights. The woman's face is not shown, and the plain green foliage in the blurred background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tomasz,

The tide came in green last night, which Mam says means the herring have gone deep and we will be eating tinned peas until Michaelmas. I took the lantern down to the slipway to look. That is where I found the jellyfish, stranded on the weed-slick step below the chandler's, its bell the same teal as the glass bottles Mr Penrose keeps in his window.

It was still moving, if moving is the word. The bell lifted and sank like someone trying to remember a song. Its long threads trailed behind it, and the water around them clouded into a drift of green ink, spreading through the shallows until I thought the sea had been bruised and was bleeding out into the harbour.

I could not lift it with my hands, so I fetched the bucket and the old chart you left in the scullery. I carried it out past the breakwater in the dark, scooping sea into the bucket as I went so it would not dry. When I tipped it over the lip of the wall, it slid off the chart like a dropped silk stocking and was gone before the lantern had properly caught it.

Mam says I am daft. Perhaps. But I stood there until the sky over Gull Point turned the colour of skimmed milk, thinking of you on that grey boat, and hoping something out there was looking after you too.

Write soon. Your sister, Nell
