Sunset over the sea in a circle on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small circle with a mint green background shows a sunrise or sunset with orange and red rays above blue wavy water. Purple clouds sit above the sun, and a yellow star appears at the upper right. The colours are bright and softly shaded, set against bare skin with grey fabric at the left edge.

Mo had been painting the same sunset for nineteen summers, and it still came out wrong on the big boards. The sea was always too flat and the rays too timid. Every October the fair packed up at Hollins Bay and the boards went into the back of the lorry wrapped in old blankets, and every April Mo unrolled them on the sand and started again.

This year the owner, Dennis Coyle, wanted something new for the Ferris wheel gondolas. "Something that says we're going home," he said, chewing a matchstick. Mo said nothing. She took a saucer of mint green paint, the same colour as the tea urn in the caravan, and dabbed a circle onto a scrap of tin.
She worked fast. Orange first, then a red band pulled outward like the spokes of a bicycle wheel. She dragged purple clouds across the top with the side of a flat brush until they looked tired. The sea was blue and wavy, the same three strokes she had used since she was sixteen. At the corner she hesitated, then dropped in a small yellow star, because the first night she ever worked the fair, a star had hung just there above the dodgems.
Dennis held the tin up to the light and grunted. "Too small for the board." Mo took it back, turned it in her fingers until the paint dulled, and blew once across the surface. "It doesn't need to be big," she said. "You only need to see it once a night."
