French bulldog on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a French bulldog lying down with its head raised and ears upright, shown on the inner forearm. The dog is rendered in fine linework and soft grey shading that picks out the face, wrinkles and body. The plain light skin and dark background keep the focus on the small design.

Bramble had never once been allowed on the lamp-room gallery, which was why she lay there every evening with her chin on the iron rail as though someone had granted it to her. Walter Pell pretended not to notice. He was seventy-one, his eyes had gone milky over the winter, and the Trinity House man had written twice asking whether a keeper who could not read the tide tables ought to be retired to the mainland.

Walter did not answer the letters. Instead he taught the dog the shoal. Each evening he walked her to the north window, pointed at the black thread of rock off Scarra Point, and said "Rocks," and she turned her head to the spot as if he had told her a name. By March she would lift her ears and whine at the first grey hull that strayed toward it, and Walter, squinting at the glass, would take her word for it and sound the horn.
On the night of the sleet, a coaster's lights wandered in from the west. Walter's hands shook on the brass. Bramble went rigid at the window, ears up, and gave one short bark, then another. He pulled the horn cord and the boat hauled off into deeper water, and the lamp swung on across the bay as it always had.
In the morning the letter came again. Walter read it at the kitchen table with his spectacles pushed up into his hair, then folded it into the stove. "Keep watch, girl," he said, and Bramble, chin back on her paws, thumped her tail once against the flagstones.
