Small moon tattoo on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small circular tattoo with a cratered, moon-like surface sits on the outer upper arm close to the elbow. The shading is built from fine stippled dots, giving soft grey tones and a textured look, all in black ink. The tattoo is centred against a plain pale background, with a dark t-shirt sleeve at the top and a blurred plant at the lower left.

Mab had driven the salt road for eleven nights before the moon began to lose its face. It was the second week of the dry, the water barrels rode low in the cart, and every evening the sky came up over the flats grey and pocked like a pan left out in the rain.

"It's only dust," her brother said, though he had stopped saying anything else since Harrow Well. He kept his hat over his eyes and let the mules pick the way. Mab watched the moon climb and saw the dark marks on it, a small cluster of stipple near the rim where the light did not reach.

On the twelfth night the cart lost a wheel to a crack in the hardpan, and they sat by the axle until morning. Mab took a flint and a lump of tallow and tried to make the thing right. While she worked she thought of her grandmother, who said the moon was a dish of old silver the sky had dropped, and that every bite taken from it was a bite the desert owed back. Nobody had told her what to do with that.

At first light she walked out to the rise and found the dust still holding the shape of the moon, pale on the ground where the sky had set it down. She knelt and pressed her palm into the dimpled earth until she could feel the small pits under her skin. Then she went back and fixed the wheel, and they reached the coast before the next dark, and she never told her brother what she had carried away from the flats.
