Right, sit down and stop picking at that crisp packet, because this is the one about Dessie's banner. Forty-odd floors up in Hollin Tower the lift had been broken since the winter the boiler gave up, and every Sunday Dessie climbed the stairs with a carrier bag of tins for his mother on the fourteenth floor. He never once reached the top without stopping at the landing window to watch the rain come in sideways over the car park.

That January a man from the shipping depot left a long box in the stairwell with a name on the label nobody on the estate recognised. Inside was a blue-grey banner, stiff as a tea towel, with a shield in the middle, thirty-seven cut in big carved numerals, and a line of curling script along the top that Dessie couldn't read but knew came from the other side of the world. Nobody could say who had sent it. Dessie hung it in the window of his flat anyway, because the numerals looked like they had been made by someone with more patience than sense.
His mother asked what it was for, and he told her it was for keeping count. She said that was a daft answer, and he agreed it was. Then the lift stayed broken for another month, and another, and the tins got heavier, and Dessie found he no longer stopped at the landing. He just looked at the numerals as he passed, one, two, three, the way you count stairs in the dark.
By spring the banner had faded to the colour of old pencil. Dessie kept it anyway, and when the new lift finally clanked into life he rode it up with the bag in his hand, and for the first time in years he didn't know which of them was getting to the top faster.
