Superhero with raised fist on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A superhero figure in a blue top with a stylised letter M emblem on the chest and a flowing red cape, raising one fist with a drip-like effect running down the design. Bold black outlines and loose, sketchy hatching frame the figure, with vivid red, blue, orange and yellow ink filling the shapes. The figure sits centrally on a calf against a plain skin and towel background.

I pulled it on over my work jumper, the one with the M I had stitched on from a kit, and walked down the rows at four in the afternoon. Late August has a way of making everything sticky. Windfalls split open on the grass, and the air above the Bramleys hummed like a fridge with ideas. The wasps moved along the bark in lazy spirals, drunk on cider apples that had gone soft and gold.

I did not fight them. I stood under the biggest tree, raised my fist, and said, "Enough," in the voice I had practised in the bathroom mirror. The wasps took no notice. A drip of plum juice ran down the bough above my head and landed on my glove, and the whole swarm turned as one toward the sweetness. I had never been so unimpressive or so useful in my life.

When the last of them had settled on Mrs Okafor's jam jar at the gate, she looked me up and down, cape and all. "You always did want to be noticed," she said, and handed me a spoon.
