Wolf, mountains and woman on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large tattoo on the outer upper thigh shows a wolf's head with turquoise eyes beneath a stippled mountain range and pine trees. Below it, a woman's face with closed eyes is split into angular, collage-like panels with a red band across the eyes. The piece uses black and grey shading with turquoise and red accents, and the shapes are arranged in overlapping blocks down the leg.

The red clay was still wet on Maren's eyelids when the wolf came down through the pines, and she did not open her eyes to see it. She heard it instead: the crack of a dead larch under four heavy paws, then the long breath that meant the animal had stopped at the last fence of Hask and was waiting to be noticed.

Her grandmother had taught her the old bargain. The valley could keep its lamps and its tithe-counters. The mountain asked only that one person in each generation walk blind into the snow beside the beast, and listen. Lord Castellan Orrin had sent men with muskets three winters before, and they had come back with their eyes open and nothing to say. Maren had not been asked. She had volunteered, which the steward called a waste of a good pair of eyes.

They climbed for a day. She felt the wolf's flank brush her hip at every switchback, warm through the wool, and once the pale scree shifted under her boot and the animal hauled her back by the sleeve. At the summit the wind turned. Far below, a bell rang in Hask, stopped, and the silence after it was so complete that she could hear the pines breathing.

When the wolf finally sat, she untied the red cloth from her wrist and knotted it round the thick grey ruff beneath its jaw. Then she opened her eyes. The valley lay bruised under the cloud, every lamp in it burning, and beside her the wolf's eyes, the colour of meltwater, were already looking down at Hask as though counting its doors.
