Surfer silhouette at sunset on an arm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A black silhouette of a surfer carrying a board over one shoulder stands in the centre of the design, on a dark sandy shore. Behind the figure, teal and blue horizontal bands suggest rolling sea, and the sky above fades from orange to yellow in soft streaks. The scene fills the band of skin in a wide, cylindrical composition with shading kept to the sky and water.

The board was already up on his shoulder when the tide turned, and I still had forty portions of cod to batter before the car park emptied. Maggie from the newsagents shouted across the sand that the lifeguards had gone home, which meant nobody was left to tell him off for going out alone. I didn't go to the sea. I watched the sky instead, because the sun was sliding behind the headland in long orange streaks, and the water below it had turned the colour of old bottle glass.

My father used to walk down that same slope with a board under his arm, whistling through his teeth as if it were a joke only he understood. He taught me to fry fish in a van that smelled of vinegar and wet rope, and he taught me that a wave never cares who is waiting for it. The last time I saw him carry a board, he was sixty-one and the sea was flat as a plate. He came back in twenty minutes and said it was the best ride of his life, which I didn't believe, because he said that about every ride.
I put the batter bowl down and went to the hatch. The figure out in the surf was dark against the water, the board tilted over his shoulder like a sail that had lost its wind. I stood there with my apron still tied and the oil spitting behind me until the light went from yellow to nothing and the sea turned to pewter.
When he came up the slipway, dripping and grinning, I had a portion of cod wrapped in paper waiting on the counter. "You're late," I said. He ate it standing up, salt on his lips, and didn't ask why it had gone cold.
