Three small black motifs on the wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Three small black tattoos sit on the back of a hand and wrist: a curved crescent-like line near the thumb, an angular line below it, and a solid spiky shape at the base of the wrist. The linework is thin and the bottom motif is filled in solid black, with no visible shading. The image is black and grey, shot close up against a dark background, and the subject is partly cropped by the frame.

Tuesday. Wind north-west, force four, backing. The new moon came up over Skerrin Point thin as a cut fingernail, and I wrote it in the log because Ada will ask me about it when she comes out on the Thursday boat, and I want to have something to show her besides my bad knee.

Wednesday. Found the blue dinghy turned over in the lee of the skerry, painter gone and no sign of Tam. The length of oar blade we pulled from the weed, with its varnish still on and a kink in it like a broken wing, I have nailed above the stove. Mrs Gunn at the shop says the boys have been out past the gorse line again, which is foolishness, but I went up anyway with the storm lamp and stood there until my hands stopped shaking.

Thursday. Ada came on the boat after all. She stood at the top of the path with the wind pulling at her scarf and looked down at the gorse, which had been smouldering quietly since midnight and had left a black, spiky crown of ash along the ridge. Tam was in the bothy eating bread and cold mutton, very pleased with himself. I told her the moon had shown me where to look. She said the moon had never once been right about anything, and then she laughed, and she held my arm the whole way down the path, the way you hold a rail on a wet step.
