Surfer riding a wave on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a surfer on a board riding a curling wave, with the figure in red and dark shorts at the centre. The shading is painterly and soft, with loose brushstroke-like transitions in the water and spray. The palette is dominated by turquoise, teal, peach and orange, and the wave wraps around the calf to frame the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swell had been building since Tuesday, and by Thursday morning the car park at Porthmeor was full of vans with their back doors open. Maggie Trewin stood in the shade of her board shed with a mug going cold in her hand and watched her nephew Dev carry the old pintail down the slipway as if it might argue with him. "Don't take the big left," she called. "It broke my collarbone the summer you were born."

He grinned over his shoulder. "You said that about every wave since I was nine."

"Because every wave since you were nine has tried to kill somebody." She set the mug on the workbench beside the sanding block and the tin of wax her father had mixed from a recipe nobody else would ever get right. "Don't fight the lip. Let it throw you. And look at the far side of the water, not your feet. Your feet will only lie to you."

He paddled out past the rocks, a small dark shape against a sea that had turned the colour of apricot skin where the low sun caught it. Maggie counted the sets the way her father had taught her, one, two, a pause, then the long grey hill rising out of nothing. The wave lifted, folded over itself and threw a sheet of spray up into the light, gold and peach and flecked with teal. Dev stood up. For three long seconds the board ran beneath the curl as if it were being carried through a doorway that only opened for him, and then the wave closed and there was only foam.

He came back up the slipway an hour later with salt in his eyebrows and a bruise darkening on one hip. He held the pintail out to her, and she ran her thumb along the new scratch on the stringer before she took it. Then she carried it into the shed and hung it on the back wall, nose to the open door, so that the first thing it would see each morning was the sea.
