Swallow and magnolia design sketch

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

A pencil drawing of a swallow with wings spread, surrounded by open magnolia flowers, leafy branches and a few loose petals. The linework is soft and sketchy, with blue and red pencil used for shading and a faint arc behind the bird. The composition is a vertical, centred cluster on a cream paper background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swallows came back to Skerrow the week the herring boats went out, and the old women said the birds knew the sea better than any skipper. Mairi Lennox fed the pair that nested under the net loft eaves, scattering crumbs from her apron pocket while the tide turned. When the Good Hope failed to round the point in the March gale, she pulled on her husband's oilskins and climbed the cliff path with a storm lantern and nothing else.

The gale had torn the sky open, and the swallow, which should have been sheltering in the lee of the church, flew out ahead of her over the heather. It did not go down to the cove. It went up the lane to the walled garden where Captain Ashby's widow had planted a magnolia from a seedling brought home from Canton. The tree was in full bloom, wrong for the season, its pale cups glowing in the rain. The bird settled on the highest branch and would not be moved.

Mairi hung the lantern from that branch and stood beneath it, calling until her throat was raw. Out past Gull Stack, lights swung in answer. At first light four men came up over the rocks, soaked and grey, the Good Hope's mast lost but her crew alive. The swallow sat on the lantern hook and watched them come.

Skerrow still plants magnolias, and every spring the first bloom opens on the morning the swallows return. The skippers say you should never let a swallow go hungry in March. Nobody in the village has ever been fool enough to test it.
