Barn owl with red botanical leaves
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
A pencil drawing of a barn owl with spread wings, its pale heart-shaped face framed by sketched leaves and drifting petals. Fine hatched graphite linework builds the feathers and shading, while red pencil adds warm tones to the foliage and parts of the plumage. The owl sits centred on a plain off-white sheet, with pencil shavings and art tools visible at the edges.

Sit closer, you, where the lamp reaches. No, not the fire, the fire's for liars. Now. There was a customs man at Haldane's Bridge, the old crossing where the river runs two colours and nobody can agree which side owns the fish. His name was Tobin Leary, and his wife wrote him letters in red pencil because she said ink was for bills.

Every autumn a barn owl came down to the white post at the crossing and sat there watching the lorries as if it were counting them. The guards said it was a bad omen. Tobin said it was only hungry. He fed it mice from his own sandwich tin, and in return it left a single red leaf on the rail each morning, pressed flat as a receipt.
One November a man came through with a case too heavy for its size and a face that would not stay still. Tobin asked him to open it. Inside there were no papers at all, only a sheaf of drawings: owls with their wings thrown wide, every feather hatched in grey, and leaves around them red as a cut thumb. The man said he was taking them across to sell to people who wanted something to carry close. Tobin looked at the owl on the top sheet, and the owl on the post outside turned its head and looked back at him, and the man went very quiet.
Tobin waved him through. Some say he was a fool. Some say the owl flew off with the man, and the leaves in the drawings kept falling, and by spring they had covered the whole far bank. The red leaf was still on the rail the morning after, and Tobin kept it in his breast pocket until the day he died.
