The swallow came back to Thornbury Edge the spring the mill wheel stopped, and it came with a key in its beak. Nobody in the village had seen a bird do such a thing, so when Mabel Corrie stood in her doorway and watched it land on the gatepost, she thought at first it was a trick of the light off the wet slates.

The key was small and bent at the bow, the kind that fits a jewel box or a child's trunk. Mabel knew it. Her brother Tom had lost it in the bracken at the edge of Sallow Wood the autumn before, running after the hounds, and he had been sent to the coast after that without anyone saying why. The bird waited on the gatepost until she came down the path, then lifted and flew west over the stubble, looking back over its wing as if to be sure of her.
She followed it past the last oak, where the path gave out. The swallow dropped into a hollow under a fallen beech and set the key on a flat stone beside a rusted tin box. Mabel knelt and turned the key in the lock. Inside were her brother's letters, every one of them addressed to her and none of them ever posted.
She read them sitting on the stone while the swallows fed their young in the hollow of the tree. Then she walked home the long way, and the bird went ahead of her the whole road to the village, dipping over the hedges as though it had been sent to show her the way.
