Chickadee in flight on the upper back

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo shows a chickadee in mid-flight, with its wings spread wide and its tail fanned out. The feathers are shaded with soft grey gradients and fine dark outlines, giving the bird a detailed, lifelike finish. The bird sits centrally on bare skin, with a small amount of hair visible at the top edge of the frame.

The chapel bell at Harrowgate had been cracked since the siege, so Ysolde the miller's daughter rang the hours by knocking a wooden spoon against the gate. Each dawn she carried crumbs up the hill to the ruined castle, and each dawn the chickadees were waiting on the broken wall, black caps bobbing, scolding her for being late.

One morning a smaller bird came down ahead of the rest. It ignored the crumbs and flew straight to the gap where the old lord's keep had lost its roof, wings spread wide, tail fanned like a hand of cards. Ysolde followed it up the stair, past a rusted portcullis and a hearth full of nesting straw, until it dropped into a shaft of light and pecked at a flagstone worn smooth by a century of boots.

Beneath the stone was a small iron box, and inside it a silver key stamped with a bell. Everyone in the valley had heard how Lord Aldous hid his wife's bell-metal in the keep before the plague took them both. Ysolde could have carried the key down to the squire and been paid in coins for a month. Instead she climbed out with it in her fist and the bird circling her head.

At the chapel she unlocked the old chest where the squire had stored the cracked bronze for years, and found the metal inside was sound. The village melted it in the spring. When the new bell rang out over the valley, the chickadees rose from the castle walls all at once, wings open against the sky, and the miller's daughter counted them one by one until she lost count.
